Subsidence & Collapse Geohazards: Problematic Soils

Subsidence Index | Collapsible Soils | Shrink / Swell Soils | Peat & Compressible Soils | Running Sands | Quick Clays | Glauconite Bearing Soils |

Collapsible Soils - Hazards associated with problematic soils which are prone to failure through collapse of their internal structure.

Shrink / Swell Soils - Soils which exhibit a volume change due to moisture content variations.

Peat and Compressible Soils - Soils with very open internal fabrics which are prone to volume reduction and flow upon loading.

Running Sands - Running sand occurs when loosely packed sand becomes fluidised by water.

Quick Clays - Sensitive soils prone to liquefaction and spreading failure.

Glauconite Bearing Soils - Asphyxiation hazard associated with glauconite bearing soils.
